Simon Boccanegra at the Met
On April 1, 5, 9, 13, 16 2016 Ferruccio Furlanetto sang Fiesco in “Simon Boccanegra” at the Met. He joined James Levine at the pit and Plácido Domingo as a Doge in the remarkable study of this Verdi’s opera.
Starting from his debut in 1980 Ferruccio Furlanetto gave more than 200 performances of 16 roles at the Met including Mephistopheles in Faust, de Silva in Ernani, Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra, Philip II and the Grand Inquisitor (debut, 1980) in Don Carlo, Cardinal Brogni in La Juive, Leporello and Don Giovanni in Don Giovanni, and Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro. They were highly appreciated by the public and press. “Mr. Furlanetto meets Verdi’s demanding, wrenching music with commanding power and moving vulnerability in both voice and gesture,” - New York Times wrote. The performance on April 1 was streamed live at the Met Opera web-site. The performance on April 9 (starting on 12-30) was broadcasted live on the Radio as part of Saturday Matinée Broadcast season.
In the Press
“Mr. Furlanetto brought consummate style and darkly rich colorings to his performance. Here, voice type and expressivity were one. ”
“…the most impressive and implacable one was bass Ferruccio Furlanetto, who played Fiesco… Furlanetto sang with a gravity that expressed the character’s anger and sorrow, and despite the enormous size of his voice, his phrasing was creamy and subtle.”
“Ferruccio Furlanetto and Brian Mulligan deliver ferocious performances as the Boccanegra’s nemeses.“
...bass Ferruccio Furlanetto, was a splendid Fiesco.
"Ferruccio Furlanetto is a singer and actor of extraordinary complexity and power. He simply has no equal. When other basses play Jacopo Fiesco, the character is often depicted as angry and bitter. Those attributes are only one element of Furlanetto's portrayal, which turns Fiesco into a huge moral force, a reservoir of memory with a sense of justice (more than revenge) who is the ultimate truth teller. Remarkable. "
